TUMALO, Ore. – The Tumalo Irrigation District is seeking contractor bids for the fifth phase of its project to pipe the Tumalo Feed Canal, to halt water loss due to evaporation and leaks and protect Tumalo Creek flows and Crescent Lake storage.

Here’s a news release distributed Friday by the irrigation district:

In its continuing commitment to watershed health and water conservation, on September 28, Tumalo Irrigation District called for contractor bids for Phase V of its Tumalo Feed Canal Conservation project.

Contractors are invited to bid on installation of a 4,000-foot-long section of 84-inch high-density polyethylene (HDPE) pipe. Bid opening is scheduled for October 26 at 2:00 p.m. with construction to start soon after.

This project is the fifth phase of a multi-phase effort to pipe the entire Tumalo Feed Canal. Ultimately, this portion of the project will permanently protect 1.8 cubic feet per second (cfs) of summer stream flow to Tumalo Creek, and approximately 333-acre feet of Crescent Lake storage releases to the watershed.

Included in the Phase V invitation to bid is an option to add another 13,500 feet of 84-inch and 60-inch pipe to reach the head of the Steele Lateral near Tumalo Reservoir Road and Collins Road on the Tumalo Feed Canal, which is to be completed in the 2017 through 2019 seasons and will permanently protect an additional 4.4 cubic feet per second (cfs) of summer stream flow to Tumalo Creek, and approximately 1184-acre feet of Crescent Lake storage releases to the watershed in the winter months.

The piping project, which eliminates water loss due to evaporation and ditch leakage, is one of Tumalo Irrigation District’s many water-saving projects aimed at improving efficiencies to the benefit of the environment, adjacent municipalities, and Tumalo Irrigation District patrons.

The overall project will be completed over the next two years, assuming funding is available, and will complete the piping of 11 miles of TID’s main canals.

The procurement of materials for Phase V was previously awarded in September 2017 to Core & Main LP, a national piping company with a regional branch in Lake Oswego, Ore.
