The River Below the Reservoir

DRC staff had the opportunity to paddle what remains of Wickiup Reservoir with expert staff from the US Forest Service and US Fish and Wildlife Service last Friday. While a drained Wickiup Reservoir is bad news for basin water supplies under current management, it was astonishing to see how well the Deschutes River remembered its old channel at the bottom of the reservoir, showcasing intact spawning gravels, deep holding pools, complex habitat features, and close proximity to historic floodplains.
